What if singing really could be simple? How would it feel to sing?

You are such an amazing voice teacher I already [after 2 lessons] have a new way of looking at my voice, singing and speaking."
—Shannon Port
What if singing really is as natural as speaking?
Your false concept: I must physically do something different than simply speaking - control, push or otherwise "help" - when I sing.
Truth: Physiologically the speaking voice and singing voice are the same instrument. Any "helping" (probably subconscious on your part) can only interfere with your sound production.
So if you are subconsciously getting in your own way, how do you become aware enough to change those habits? You must have a great voice teacher to guide you.
Physiologically, singing IS as natural as speaking. Physiologically, the speaking voice and the singing voice are the same instrument. You do not carry around a voice box labeled Use for Singing Only. Yet too often our concept of singing is that it must be something out of the ordinary - that it must be extra-ordinary. You might believe (subconsciously) that you need to physically change something in the vocal apparatus to sing. This thought process is what creates the struggle to sing!
Truth is that singing is the most natural of all instruments. The human voice responds to music naturally. An infant can imitate musical sounds on pitch and in rhythm. Because there is no filter yet that says singing has to be a certain sound or that it's dumb or that you have to sound like someone on the radio!
Singing and speaking are as natural and effortless as breathing when you can get out of your own way and allow the natural instrument to sound!
You speak on pitch in normal conversation. You also speak in rhythm - sometimes smooth and legato, sometimes pointed and staccato. The musical elements of speech define your distinct voice. Pitch and rhythm specify the meaning of your words and give them life.
To sing like you speak, you speak on musical pitch to combine the natural ease of the speaking voice with singing. This eliminates the urge to try to do something other than natural, something extra-ordinary to create singing. What a relief it is to simply speak on pitch!
Singing feels effortless and even on songs I'm less familiar with I'm not the least bit self-conscious. Thank You!!"
—Robert D, NYC
What if you actually could improve your singing with every practice session?
- Practice one detail of your process at a time, focus completely on that detail
- Be an observer of your process, not a judge
- Have fun exploring and getting to know your instrument intimately (You live together all the time! Why not?)
- Don't focus on NOT doing the bad habit, instead focus on DOING the good habit
- Be patient with yourself
Knowing how to practice can dramatically increase your skill with every session. Practicing should be an exploration of how your instrument. Become an observer of your process and the results.
Good practice is focused on one detail of technique at a time. With full concentration on say, releasing your jaw on inhale - every inhale, every time - then that particular detail of technique becomes habit. You must become curious about how your instrument works without being judgmental about the result. It's a great adventure! Then practice becomes joyful and real changes take place.
You might be totally unaware of what muscle groups you use or your thought process while singing. Practice must be structured to bring your unconscious habits into consciousness so we can examine whether they are working for you or fighting against you. Then when you know, you can begin to change the bad habit.
Practice is a time to be gentle with yourself and to explore and observe.
Don't just draw in your audience- mesmerize them!
Sally, you’ve made singing so simple, it’s cry-worthy!"
— RaY RaY Pine, singer/songwriter
Why do you need a voice teacher?
- You do not hear yourself the way the rest of the world does, so you are therefore not a good judge of your sound.
- Most of your bad habits are subconscious and must be observed and brought to your attention by a caring professional.
- Singing is counter-intuitive. You might feel that you are getting a deep breath, when it's actually a shallow breath! Only a trained observer can help you.
- The brain is quick to learn concepts of good vocal production, the body is a slow learner and needs constant reminder and reinforcement.
- When good habits begin to succeed, you will wonder how you were able to do it so easily. A good voice teacher knows and can give you the feedback you need to coordinate mind and body.
A good voice teacher is a career partner - the same as any other trainer or coach. Do you think Michael Jordan got to be Michael Jordan on his own? NO! He absolutely did not. No one does it alone. No one. Michael Jordan had an entire support network of great trainers and coaches. As an artist you need a team of people to support your growth too. One vital part of that team is your voice teacher.
You hear your voice from the inside - through bone and muscle, etc. We, the auditors, hear you with our ears. This is one of the main reasons why we need someone else giving us feedback to learn.
A voice teacher can give you constructive feedback and a fresh approach to your voice. If you are like most singers what you give yourself during a practice session is a browbeating! Unfortunately that means that you are concentrating on beating up on yourself and not on vocal power tools! A good voice teacher can replace your critical mind with positive feedback.
Singing, good singing is counter-intuitive. What you feel you need to do is generally the opposite of what is best. You may think you are dropping your jaw, but are really not. Or you might swear your soft palate is opening when you are really shoving the back of the tongue down making it feel like you have created more space. In actuality, shoving down the back of the tongue compresses the larynx and prevents the free flow of sound!
An experienced voice teacher can usually tell immediately what a student has done to get in the way of natural process. Then through careful guidance, the student begins to understand the bad habit and how to switch to a healthy habit.
The brain is very quick to understand the concepts of good vocal technique. The body, however, learns very slowly and needs constant correction.
A voice teacher's job is to help you give instructions to your body, your instrument. For example; you are working on getting a natural open of the airways on inhale. There are several points of technique that help you get that natural opening on inhale. You may get one of them without knowing or understanding how you did.
Many times you are unaware how you were able to get a great result. Your voice teacher is there to define for you what process you followed to gain that great result. Positive reinforcement gradually helps you to understand the most efficient path to great singing.
Thank you Sally for figuring out how this "Singing" stuff works and thank you for sharing it with the world."

How do you find a good voice teacher?
Well, you found this website, so you found at least one! Look for someone who knows the vocal anatomy, the latest research, who keeps current with what's happening in the industry, who offers clear explanations and practical solutions to your vocal challenges. For instance, if you ask about diaphragmatic breathing and the teacher launches into a 10-step process to proper breathing, you're on the wrong path! On the other hand, if a teacher tells you to think of your stomach as a balloon and to put pressure on it from all sides and says nothing further about breathing, run far and fast! (both above scenarios actually exist! Scary!)
Sally! I want to hire you to come with me everywhere! 24/7!"

Why "speaking on pitch"?
When you get to this point with your voice, then you are truly able to communicate with your audience and in the end that's all they really want - to know who you are and what you have to say. AND your whole mind and body are ready to serve the music you are sharing with the audience. You can be spontaneous and vulnerable when you are confident.
"I actually panicked in the middle of a show because I thought I had been just talking with friends! I thought maybe I had forgotten to sing! Of course I was singing, but it was so easy and natural that I was having fun and forgot to worry about my voice! I was merely speaking on pitch."
What if you choose not to study?
What is preventing you from studying voice? The cost? Fear of failure? Fear of success? Can't figure out if you're worth it or not?
If you are a singer, if you are a songwriter, if you enjoy singing and want to do more, or if you are a music educator who must sing in the course of your work, there is no excuse good enough!
The cost of voice lessons with a great teacher is equal to a preventative medical program, a career building coach, a life coach, a musical advisor and an education of your vocal anatomy. A voice teacher is a vital part of your career team. If singing is part of your livelihood, you can't afford NOT to study. Look at someone like Tony Bennett. He is in his early 80's and still singing like a God! Because he has a solid technique from which he never wavers.
Many a singer does not find their way to a voice teacher until it's too late. They wait until they have problems singing and the voice has suffered damage. The vocal folds are very delicate tissue and do not respond well to surgery. Yes, surgery! If you develop nodes or other nasties on your vocal folds, surgery will likely be necessary to remove the damage. Don't go there!!
Learning to sing means learning to use your voice well so that no damage from use occurs - ever!
You don't have to be a star or a potential star to need a voice teacher. All you need is the desire to sing with freedom and joy.
It was love at first lesson!"
